About the Event

This Monday, January 31st,  2022 at 11:15 am EST the Florida Coalition for Transgender Liberation, Florida Student Power Network, Dream Defenders, Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates, and National Action Network are hosting an online press conference to urge the legislature to block HB 7/SB 148 the “Destruction of Florida Education Act” and stop its racist and transphobic attack on our children.

If passed HB 7 will reshape the Florida Education Equity Act (Statute 1000.05) to allow for the  discrimination and oppression of people of color, immigrant people, and gender diverse students and employees in K-20 education systems and expand the ideology of discrimination in systems of power in the US and Florida and reshape the Florida Civil Rights Act of 1992.

In addition, this bill will prevent white, straight and/or cisgender children and employees from learning about the reality of discrimination against people of color, immigrants, and gender diverse people in the United States and Florida.  Students and employees of color, gender diverse and/or immigrant children and employees already know discrimination exists - they experience it every day.  This bill is meant to keep white, straight and cisgender kids and staff ignorant of their privilege and their part in systemic discrimination and repression and stop older students and allied employees from enacting responsible civics engagement and organizing practices to combat problems faced by marginalized and oppressed people.

It is clear that the Florida Legislative Leadership and Governor Ron DeSantis are working in this adaptation of the Governor’s “anti-WOKE Act” to uphold their own privilege and continue systems of white supremacy and transphobia in every facet of life in the US in Florida.

It's time to protect our most marginalized and vulnerable.  Not remove their protections.  We demand the legislature block HB 7/SB 148 and promote safe, equitable education and workplaces in Florida for all.
