About the Event
Join Florida Coalition for Transgender Liberation online at 7:45 am EST/6:45 am CT as we launch our watch party of SB 254 and HB1069 with an analysis of where the bills are now and their impact moving forward on the House and Senate floor.
SB 254 is in its last FL Senate committee - FL Senate Fiscal Committee which starts at 8:30 am EST/7:30 am CT and the bill currently:
1) criminalizes gender affirming care for trans+ youth and adults (3rd degree felony for healthcare professionals who violate provisions laid out about children and 1st degree misdemeanor for provisions about adult trans+ care), 2) sets up a safe haven in Florida for parents who oppose gender affirming care so they can LEGALLY KIDNAP their children and remove them from parents who support gender affirming care for their children. This sets a dangerous legal precedent in Florida, and across the nation, and will likely lead declaring gender affirming care as child abuse by Florida state agencies, courts and/or the Governor, 3) redefines sex prescriptions and procedures in a way that denies transgender existence and excludes affirming care for trans+ people in Florida, 4) changes the definition of sex to deny that trans folx exist through the following language - sex is defined as “classification of a person as either male or female based on the organization of the human body of the person for a specific reproductive role, as indicated by the person’s sex chromosomes, naturally occurring sex hormones, and external and internal genitalia present at birth”. If it passes Senate Fiscal Policy its next stop is the Senate Floor.
HB1069 is in its last FL House Committee- FL Education and Employment Committee this bill:
1) only allows schools to teach “biological sexes” and heterosexuality in sex education - covers pre-k through higher education in statute language, 2) redefines sex to deny trans existence and match Yarborough's definition of sex in SB 254, 3) sets up more rules protecting a parents right to object to LGBTQ and transgender people and the science of gender and reproductive fluidity creating more capacity for anti-trans parents and individuals to petition the school board and chilling any ability for their to be valid safe zone teaching around reproductive rights and existence of transgender and gender diverse people.
Stay after to commiserate and support each other as well as explore novel online and in-person ideas on how we can fight the bills.
